Pump Up the Volume! A Multi-Layered Strategy for Effectively Managing Aerosols

Description: Aerosol generation and its associated health risks to dental professionals has been researched since the 1950s. The recent pandemic has brought increased awareness to this invisible villain, but fear and abandonment of evidence-based therapies which are essential to patient care should not be a solution. Ultrasonic instrumentation is the current standard of care for periodontal debridement, and this course will explore the science long established around how to maximize a safe working environment while using this technology.

Objectives:

• List 3 elements recommended for effective aerosol management during the use of aerosol generated procedures
• Debate why aerosols are a significant health risk to dental healthcare personnel and explore why opportunities to lower risks lie within a multi-layered approach
• Describe the research presented for best practices and options for: personal protective equipment, pre-procedural rinses; and the use of high-volume evacuation to develop a plan for the safety of your patients and dental staff
